What is Standards-Based Grading? (6th Grade GRADING)
The 6th Grade Teams at DPMS are committed to dramatic gains in student achievement. Our standards-based grading philosophy is centered on student achievement and reflects not only what a student knows and can demonstrate, but also provides explicit feedback to all concerned parties (students, teachers, parents, administration, etc.) about skills that students are still developing and need to continue to work on.
Mastery-based grading and reporting does the following:

Mastery-based grading and reporting does the following:
- Gives students, parents and teachers a clear picture of academic achievement aligned to the content standards.
- Helps teachers and students focus and adjust instruction and learning.
- Allows for student revision of work, which leads to higher learning and improved accountability and engagement.
- Improves student motivation.
- Is based 90% on tests, quizzes and mastery-based projects, which will be entered into the Canyons Skyward Grading System.
- Uses homework, classwork, and all other “practice” work for only 10% of grade calculations.
- Allows students to retake quizzes for the current unit being studied when all assignments are completed, students have reviewed their notes, corrected mistakes on their first attempt, met with their teacher for a re-teaching lesson, and submitted the retake form with parent, student and teacher signatures.
- Is not based on practice work or learning behaviors (learning behaviors are reported separately on Citizenship Grades).
- Creates better communication between parents, students and teachers through Objective Trackers sent home regularly.
- Allows for student self-assessment, and parent and teacher feedback.
