September - Kindness Campaign
This year Draper Park Middle School is holding a Kindness Campaign to spread kindness throughout our building. Each month students are taught two short lessons about a topic that is tied to Kindness. In August, counselors introduced the kindness campaign to the students by showing the short clip seen below. Then students were given the task of creating a Kindness Poster to hang in the halls to help remind everyone there at DPMS that we need to be aware of others and spread Kindness everyday.
October - Anti-Bullying month
October is Anti-bullying month at Draper Park Middle School. The first kindness lesson of the month was about Bullying. Students learned how to be an upstander instead of a bystander. The second lesson began with a video about a student who dealt with bullying by taking the initiative and "opening doors" to change his path in life. The presentation and video students were shown can be viewed below.
November - Gratitude
The Kindness Campaign topic for November is Gratitude. During this month students were taught two short lessons about Gratitude. The first lesson included a short video that challenged students to write down things they were grateful for in the categories of Person, Place, and Things. The second lesson included a video proving that if a person communicates their gratitude to others it makes them a happier person. Students will be writing a short thank you letter to someone they are grateful for during the lesson. You can preview the videos below.
December - Empathy
December's kindness topic was Empathy. Students discussed the definition of empathy and ways to show empathy. They took a short quiz to test their level of empathy and then discussed situations of using empathy by “putting themselves in someone else’s shoes.”
January - Diversity and Acceptance
This month students talked about Stereotypes and Prejudice. They watched Dr. Seuss’s Star Belly Sneetches and discussed how the book can apply to real life. Using what they learned from the book, the students talked about Tolerance and Acceptance of others. Students were challenged to find ways to accept and include others at DPMS.
January - Friendship Soup
Students watched a video called “Friendship Soup” that talked about the ingredients that make up a good friendship. The class discussion included topics about how to handle “sticky situations” that come about with friends in middle school and how to have difficult conversations with your friends.
February - Random Acts of Kindness
The month of February is National Random Acts of Kindness month. Students learned what types of random acts of kindness they could do to help around the school. They were challenged to try to do one Random Act of Kindness during the month of February. "When you serve others, you gain more in return, and you will attract respect and generosity from others." – Deepak Chopra
February - How to Make Friends
Students watched a YouTube video by the Kid President demonstrating ways to make new friends. He covered questions to ask, topics for conversation, and how humor can always help start a friendship.
March - The Real You
Students watched a clip from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs where the main character talked about how she had to change to “fit in.” The class discussion focused on social pressures, bullying, helping others and always staying true to yourself.
March - Positive Self Talk
Kindness starts with you! Positive self-talk has been shown to improve relationships, school and sports performance, test scores, and even how long we live. Students discussed how to have a positive self-image and use positive statements to keep them happy and healthy.
April - Respect
Respecting others is very important in creating a kind atmosphere at DPMS. Students discussed respectful and disrespectful acts and how they affect other people. Then as a class they came up with ways to show respect at DPMS.
April - Digital Citizenship
Did you know that on average students spend 7 hours and 38 minutes on some type of media every day? This month the kindness campaign focused on kindness in the digital world. Students learned what it means to be a good digital citizen. They learned to THINK before they send information on social media.
May - How did YOU make a difference?
For the last month of the Kindness campaign this year we had the journalism students create a short video asking students how they have used Kindness at DPMS. Along with the video, students reviewed the different topics from the year and were reminded to keep exercising their Kindness Muscle during the summer.
